Join us and upload nowSignificance of biomarkers in peri-implant sulcular fluid: An insight into the literature
Two forms of implant diseases have been identified in literature: Peri Implant mucositis and Peri-implantitis. According to a recent systematic review peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis have a prevalence ranging from 19 to 65% and from 1 to 47%, respectively. The combination of clinical and radiographic parameters, such as PD, BOP, suppuration, mobility and marginal bone loss, are the commonly used parameters for the diagnosis of peri-implantitis. However, these diagnostic processes might not be sensitive or specific enough to distinguish disease onset, development, and activity. Early detection of peri-implant destruction, as well as monitoring progression of bone loss is extremely important. As main markers of peri-implantitis are bone destruction and inflammation, biomarkers and enzymes in implant sulcus fluid (PISF) focusing on these disease entities are of interest. A biomarker is an indicator of a biological state and can help to distinguish between normal and pathologic processes.Research to look at associations between certain biomarkers with health and/or disease can give more tools to clinicians for better understanding the pathogenesis of such peri-implant diseases. Thus the lecture provides an insight to this major diagnostic tool which holds huge diagnostic and prognostic value in near future.
The lecture will be conducted by Dr Ankita Jain a Passionate Periodontist who has been approved as “Principal Researcher” on the Development of Community Based Tobacco Cessation Programme, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt of India.
