Albert Mehl qualified as a dentist in 1989 at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg. He continued his studies including a Master Degree in Physics there before being appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology and Pediatric Dentistry in 1992. He then moved to a similar position in the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich the following year before becoming a full Professor in 2002 and a further academic doctorate in human biology in 2003. Since 2010 Albert Mehl is full Professor in the Department of Computerized Dentistry at the University of Zurich. His research activities embrace the physical and mechanical properties of restorative materials with particular emphasis on ceramics and composites. Softstart polymerisation and a 3D wear measurement system are examples, which were developed and introduced by him to dentistry. His specific research focus in CAD/CAM dentistry covers scanner and software developments, which already resulted in a number of commercial products.
